“The situation is heart wrenching. We have got to all help each other” - Lisa Stockley on her vaccination experience

In the week when Cornwall has opened its first mass vaccination centre at Stithians Show Ground, Lisa Stockley, a valued member of the Green Light team discussed her experience of having the vaccine with colleague Heather Sanders.

Lisa has worked for Green Light for over three years and was initially very concerned that due to severe allergies she would not be able to have a vaccine. Lisa said, “Due to the severity of my allergies, I felt it would have been like playing ‘Russian roulette’ to have taken up the offer of the Pfizer vaccine”. Lisa was naturally anxious about taking up any vaccine for this same reason and initially the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was not available locally.

As a complementary therapist and a keen advocate of all things natural, Lisa said she had been of the view in the early stages of the pandemic that community (herd) immunity would naturally happen and the virus could be managed.  The turning point for Lisa, and I am sure many of us will share her feelings, was after Christmas and lockdown 3.

Lisa said, “It’s becoming too much. I experienced the passing of a very close friend’s mother to Covid and I just stopped and thought, we have got to help each other with getting out of this. We have to take responsibility for protecting ourselves and protecting each other. It is time to think clearly and keep the vaccine in perspective. At some point in the past, important vaccines such as for TB, MMR and the flu vaccines, have all had to be developed, and they have been life saving. As a mum I have had to make the decision about whether to consent to vaccination of my children; and you do what is right. We have to think about those who will come after us.”

Lisa gave a very positive personal example of how she was supported during the vaccine process. The process was very well organised; reassurance and support were available at all times in the process. Lisa said, “It couldn’t have been a better experience for me. If you have any doubts, just go. They are really reassuring and professional”.

Lisa was able to discuss her concerns regarding the vaccine and her history of allergies and was given the reassurance and back-up medical support was on hand to give her the confidence to have the vaccine.

Lisa also spoke highly of the support and reassurance she has received throughout the process from management within Green Light; in particular she underlined that she had never felt any pressure to take up the vaccination and felt fully understood with regard to her concerns about having the Pfizer vaccine because of potential allergic reactions. Lisa said, “I couldn’t fault Green Light at all; they have been so supportive to me and understanding about the decision I have had to make.”

This is a good result all round; Lisa had her first vaccination without any issues relating to her allergies. In fact it went so well that she was back out trail running the day after!

Green Light are incredibly proud to say that currently over 60% of all team members across the organisation have now taken up the offer of the vaccine.  Our teams are currently supporting the people who live in our homes to be vaccinated against Covid19.  That is an amazing achievement at this stage and we hope to continue this trend upwards, helping to keep each other, and those we support safe from becoming infected with Covid19.

Final words given over to Lisa, who feels so passionately about the importance of having the vaccine that she has offered her personal support to any colleagues who have similar allergy concerns, or are just nervous about taking that next step;

“The situation is heart wrenching. We have got to all help each other”.
